Gary Numan to Tour US this Fall

30 years ago when I was in College, this album was a polarizing force.

The-pleasure-principle

People either loved it or HATED it. It
was new or shall we say, Nu. London based Gary Webb was exactly my age and had changed
his name to Gary Numan, part man part machine, part of a rapidly rising
new wave that was crashing on the musical shores.

In the small college
town of Bethany, West Virginia there were those who loved their
Southern Rock, cranking up Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Sknyrd and The
Marshall Tucker Band and then there were the few, the proud, the geeky,
the  new wavers.

The song "Cars" from this album went to #1 in the UK and #9 in the US. It sounded like nothing else on the radio with Synthesizers fed through guitar effect pedals and Numan's nasally robotic voice. It's still a great song. My college friend and co-conspirator in the great new wave takeover of the college radio station RadioHannibal went to see the concert in Spring of 1980 in Pittsburgh and came home raving. Of course he did that a lot, but this time it was clear that he had just experienced something truly Nu and exciting.

Now it's your turn.

The Beatles Complete on Ukulele

As promised yesterday, it's Dad here with a post designed to appeal to all readers and music fans young and old.

You may think you already have enough music by The Beatles in your collection.

The Beatles Complete on Ukele

You may be right.

You may already have The Beatles Complete on Ukulele.

But if you don't, quite simply, your collection is not complete.

The Beatles Complete on Ukulele

You don't have to down load them all – you can listen to each track right on the site and also download individual tracks. A total of 76 songs by 76 different artists.  There is a very well written post along with each song. This was a very ambitious project.

But it isn't really complete. Yet. The master plan was to record and release a song a week for 185 weeks, but he 2 guys creating this brilliant project, Dave and Roger,  have had a falling out and the web site includes a vague promise that thee will be a continuation in some form – perhaps 2 forms – some time.  For now, there is plenty to enjoy so go have a listen.

The Websites New Writer For The Week

Although I (Chelsea) have been the one writing the daily posts for forever the website is going to be turned over to my father for the next week. I'll be gone for that week on a trip serving the community in West Virginia…thrilling. While there there won't be any wifi and no chance I'll even have time to do any posting. So the daily posts will be from dad this week which will explain the change in writing style and the change in topic. So don't be too hard on him and I will resume posting in about a week.

It was 20 years ago today – the First HFS-tival

Wow.

It wasn't called the HFS-tival that year, in fact it wasn't even our idea. The Fairfax County Department of Parks and Recreation called and said "Hey, we're having a family friendly fun Fourth of July festival, would you like to help promote it and bring some bands?"

So we did. The Tragically Hip, The Pursuit of Happiness, Concrete Blonde, Neal Cody, Winter Hours and a couple others I can't recall.

It was $5 a carload. It was fun. We decided to do it again.

The next year there were bigger bands and a much bigger crowd.

It was more fun. We decided to do it again.

It wasn't until year four, when the
Painful decision to move to RFK Stadium was made that the name HFS-tival was created. There was a lot of of arguing for and against the big stadium. After all stadium shows suck.

So we had to be bigger than the venue. We promoted it "We're taking over RFK for the HFS-tival 20 bands for 20 bucks." Sold out in 53 minutes. It didn't matter
Who the bands were, the audience wanted to be there for the scene, the
Party, the event of the summer.

But the bands were great. INXS, The Posies, Iggy Pop, Stereo MCs, Belly, Matthew Sweet and X. And More.

2 stages, inside and out, rides, beer, games and Gak! We had a Gak pit – remember that stuff? Nickelodeon sent us cases of it and we filled a bath tub – and people reached deep down in looking for prizes.

We provided free booth space to about 50 progressive non Profit organizations to hand out info and talk to the people. It was awesome.
So we decided to do it again.

And again and again. It was imitated dupilcated and made  a LOT of money for the station.

Until the Year there was no HFS.

But this year there is another HFS-tival. Sometime in September. At Merriweather, promoted by WHFS2 which can be heard online or via the HD2 Channel of 94.7 fm in DC.

Tickets have been on sale for a while now, great seats still available.

No rides, no games, No Gak.

Part Two of An Interview with Cady Groves.

The second half of my interview with Cady where we talk about her life motto, pranks, sports, and what is ahead for her in the future. Now that Cady has been signed there are no doubts about Cady skyrocketing her way to the top of the music world. Even if she's small she has a huge voice and shows absolutely no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Part One of An Interview with Cady Groves.

I was able to sit down with Cady last Friday in her very cool and air conditioned bus that she shared with the band Drive-A. We ended up talking so much and having such a good time that the interview is being split up into two parts. The second part will be uploaded tomorrow right here. Until then here’s the first part and make sure to buy Cady’s album right now on iTunes.
