I <\/o:p><\/span> recently watched the movie \u201cDazed and Confused\u201d <\/a>for the
\nfirst time. In case you are the other
\nperson who hasn\u2019t seen the film, it is a set in a small  Texas
\ntown on High School Graduation Day 1976, which is the year I graduated from High
\nSchool in a small Pennsylvania town.

The film opens with a GTO prowling the High School parking lot to \u201cSweet Emotion\u201d and the last scene has a carload of kids at dawn heading to Houston<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to get Tickets for the summer’s main event – an Aerosmith concert. It all feels so familiar. The
\nsights, the sounds, the smells, the haircuts, the cars\u2026 it\u2019s all perfect. There\u2019s
\neven a somewhat geeky character that has my hair and glasses from that era.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p>The soundtrack is often cranked, a full frontal
\nassault of all that rocked in that era. In addition to  Aerosmith, there’s Foghat, Frampton, ZZ Top, Alice
\nCooper, Nazareth, Sabbath, Kiss, Deep Purple, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer,
\nSteve Miller, War, even Head East\u2019s \u201cNever Been any Reason\u201d gets blasted in the
\nforeground of this 70\u2019s version of American Graffiti. Led Zeppelin, which is
\nhonored by the film’s title is missing from the actual film, it must have been a rights
\nissue\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p>So it was a cold splash on my warm fuzzy nostalgia when I received
\na terrible phone call with the news that one of my closest childhood friends
\nand a fellow member of the Class of 1976 had died of a sudden massive Heart
\nAttack.  It has been years since I saw
\nJames Wendell Maudlin, but my memories of him, his energy, enthusiasm and
\nspirit are forged in my brain along with the soundtrack of the times.
 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p>Jim was the first person to play numerous crucial records
\nfor me, including Sgt. Pepper<\/em>, Deep
\nPurple\u2019s Machine Head<\/em>, Black
\nSabbath\u2019s Paranoid,<\/em> Jethro Tull\u2019s Thick as a<\/em> Brick Spirit\u2019s 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus<\/em>, and the first
\nEagles album. Then there was the
\nWoodstock Soundtrack, I can vividly recall putting the speakers in the window
\nand blasting the infamous \u201cFish Cheer\u201d for the entire neighborhood to
\nenjoy.
 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p>We built and raced Go-Carts, created treacherous sledding
\nruns, explored caves, rode mini bikes and motorcycles, built tree forts, hell
\nthe guy taught me how to drive a car. We
\nsat for hours behind the wheel of his Dad\u2019s 1972 Triumph Spitfire going through
\nthe shift patterns and winning race after imaginary race\u2026 anxiously waiting for
\nthe day when we got our licenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p>The spirit of Dad\u2019s Car Radio \u2013 Rock and Roll on the open road
\n– was very much a part of the Jim Maudlin I knew. Think I\u2019ll go entertain the
\nneighbors in tribute\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n
